You’d expect a pretty stimulating choice of winter activities from a place with 6 months of winter. And the Yukon does not disappoint.
What Yukon adventure could be more iconic than aurora hunting? The northern lights for real will surpass every idea you’ve ever had of them.
Admittedly the aurora can be a tough act to follow. But you’re in luck – you’re in the Yukon. On your next visit, you can take a scenic road trip to Alaska along the legendary Dempster Highway, or hike to an ice waterfall in stunning backcountry and climb it.
Every adventure is iconic when the Yukon is your backdrop.

Through the window, we watched as the snow continued to fall, adorning the landscape like a Christmas card. Our lodge was comfortable and oh so peaceful, the only sounds a crackling fire in the stove, the murmuring of my companions and the occasional clink of glass on glass. I threw another log on the fire and snuggled into my easy chair…
Dare to dream of Yukon-sized comforts… From rustic wilderness cabins to luxurious lodges, we’ve got a Yukon home for you to cozy up to.
The Yukon has so much to offer visitors that even when you get off the beaten path, you will encounter spectacular, once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Experiences like custom hikes on routes through the Coast Mountains, the Ruby Range or Hess Mountains where you’re unlikely to see another human.
Or paddling, fishing and boating on the beautiful, pristine miles of the interconnected Southern Lakes. Or floating one of the most northerly rafting trips in the world through the remote canyons and mountains of Ivvavik National Park on the Firth River. Here, your only neighbours will be the thousands of members of the Porcupine caribou herd and roaming muskox.
If a gentler experience is what you’re after, float down the beautiful Takhini River from Kusawa Lake on a stand up paddle board, the gorgeous mountain backdrops reflected in crystal clear water.
Yukon Wild member operators can make any of these experiences – and many more like them – available to you, either through guided expeditions or by providing the gear, information and shuttle services you need to get off the beaten path and into the trip of a lifetime.
Whitehorse justifiably calls itself the Wilderness City. After all, the only development over most of its 416 square kilometers are a network of trails, a river corridor and numerous parks, protected areas and green spaces.
Within a few miles of City Hall, you can be on top of a mountain, staring down an awesome mountain bike trail, fishing for trout, char or grayling in pristine alpine lakes, or running your canoe or kayak through legendary Miles Canyon.
But here’s the second half of the story: it really is a city, able to satisfy your every amenity, comfort, recreational and cultural interest. Talk to a Yukon Wild operator about historic walking tours, canoe/bike/gear rentals, hiking trails, cultural festivals and activities, cabin and lodge rentals, and so much more.
Whitehorse: all the wild you can handle, with a latté at the end of the day.
If you’re looking for a river that has it all, you can’t do better than the Yukon River. At over 3000 km, it’s one of the longest in North America, the longest in the territory, and has a long history as the main highway of First Nations people and the Klondike Gold Rush. This is a river that connects Yukoners to each other, their past, their cultural heritage and the authentic wilderness that defines the territory.
And the best part is you don’t have to be a major tripper – or even an expert paddler – to enjoy a float down this most accommodating waterway. Your Yukon Wild guide will point out the remains of log cabins, historic Fort Selkirk, old telegraph stations, and paddlewheelers that were abandoned on shore almost 100 years ago – not to mention the salmon and wildlife sightings that are virtually guaranteed.
Licensed Yukon Wild guides can lead you on a single, multi-day, or even multi-week adventure along the Yukon River. Or, if you want a self-guided adventure, our operators can outfit you with everything you need, from the canoe, equipment and maps to the return to Whitehorse at journey’s end.
This is the one you’ve waited your whole life for – a rafting expedition through the greatest remaining wilderness in the world. Yours will be the most fundamental human–wilderness interface, where glaciers, bald eagles, salmon and grizzlies are as commonplace as Himalaya-like mountain valleys and glaciers.
The Tatshenshini River takes you through the world’s largest bio-preserve, the Yukon, B.C., and Alaska Alsek–Tatshenshini Provincial Park and Glacier Bay National Park, and out to the Gulf of Alaska.
The Alsek River, voted by guides themselves as the "Wildest River in North America," is renowned for its big water, stupendous mountains, glaciers and ice.
These are rivers that demand the skills, experience and accreditation of Yukon Wild guides and operators. Whether you have a day or two weeks, you owe it to yourself to fulfill this larger-than-life rafting dream.
It’s as big as the state of New Jersey, and over three quarters of it is covered in mountains and ice. Here, Canada’s highest mountain, Mount Logan, stands just shy of six kilometers tall in the massive St. Elias range. Sound forbidding? Don’t you believe it! For starters, the other quarter of this park just happens to be the most beautiful, pristine, forested, rivered and laked wilderness the entire North has to offer.
Yukon Wild operators offer tours and outfitting for groups, families, and independent travellers to and into Kluane. They can fly you in for glacier hikes or hiking/camping tours, guide you by raft on the world famous Alsek River, show you on a boat where the trout are biting, take you on the Donjek route to the toe of a great glacier or set up a series of day hikes with all the payoffs and thrills of a backcountry hike, but with a light pack and comfy cabin at day’s end.
Kluane National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Come spend a day or three, and you’ll see why.
North. The word gets used pretty loosely. Often, someone else’s north is somewhere south of the Yukon. And even here, Whitehorse is not truly north. To go all the way north, you want the Dempster Highway.
You’ll drive through the most amazing, pristine and awe-inspiring landscapes on earth, from boreal forest valleys and rivers, through mountain ranges and over endless rolling tundra hills. On to and beyond the Arctic Circle, to the Northwest Territories and even beyond that, if you connect to the newly opened Inuvik Tuktoyaktuk Highway, to the shores of the Arctic Ocean.
Yukon Wild operators can reveal the True North to you on a guided tour up the Dempster with numerous options to suit your abilities and interests, from camping to hotel stays, hiking, flightseeing and side trips, in the endless summer days or under winter’s northern lights.
See the North, the True North – your own Ultima Thule.
If you like to go adventuring in the wilderness, you know that trip preparations can become an adventure in their own right. Sometimes it's a major challenge just to assemble the equipment required for a safe and enjoyable backcountry experience.
Since the Yukon is one of the top wilderness destinations worldwide, our Yukon Wild equipment rental companies are experienced camping equipment and outdoor gear suppliers of everything you need for your film production, expedition, or Yukon summer or winter wilderness adventure.
Yukon Wild’s equipment rental companies cover the hardware and accessories for river rafting, flat water, expedition style and whitewater canoeing. Start from nothing and get into the wilderness with rentals that include wall tents, stoves, axes, and sleeping bags. Or enjoy our Yukon winter with rented avalanche safety equipment and snowshoes that you can rely on.
Put on those Carhartts, let go of the Cheechako that’s been holding you back, and embrace your inner Sourdough. Immerse yourself in Yukon’s northern lifestyle: paddle that river, mush those dogs, pick some wild berries and mushrooms to go with the grayling you caught. Then go and paint your canvas, inspired by Yukon’s many-hued palette.
The Yukon has a way of doing that to people. Starting with Robert Service and The Spell of the Yukon, or Jack London and The Call of the Wild, the Yukon has inspired countless writers, photographers and painters. Yukon Wild guides bring this backdrop to life through quality instruction, attention to detail and hands-on learning.
If you want a tour or vacation that will exercise your mind as well as your body, the Yukon is an ideal natural classroom. With the guidance of Yukon Wild operators, you will come away with an enriched understanding and appreciation of northern history, culture, flora, fauna and photography.
The Yukon’s big. You could fit New York State into it three times and still have room left over for Vermont, New Hampshire and two or three of those other little states. So if you want to see a good part of it, you’ve got some planning to do – and a lot of driving.
Or, leave that all up to an experienced Yukon Wild van tour operator, and focus on the experience itself. Choose a route with the right mix of destinations, scenery, hotel or camping options to suit your interests and abilities. These include the Alaska Highway skirting Kluane National Park; the Dempster Highway crossing the Arctic Circle; the remote Robert Campbell Highway, where seeing moose is more likely than other vehicles; and the Klondike Highway, which takes you to the heart of the '98 Gold Rush.
We’ll hit the brakes on a regular basis to enjoy the stunning scenery and activities like hiking, paddling, biking and flightseeing, or add-on side trips to Skagway, Anchorage and Denali National Park.
Poets have tried to describe them, artists to portray them, scientists to explain them. But once you see them for yourself, you’ll realize that they all fall short, their words, pictures and explanations paling in comparison to the real thing.
The northern lights will surpass every magic act and animated feature you've ever seen, as they sweep, unfurl, turn over into entirely new shapes and colours, then vanish and reappear in another quadrant of the nighttime sky.
By dogsled or snowmobile, Yukon Wild operators will whisk you away through forested wilderness to photograph aurora borealis in all their magnificence. Enjoy top lodging and camping amenities in comfort while watching the most spectacular show the North has to offer: the aurora borealis or northern lights.
If you’re ready to leave normal behind, you’re ready for the Yukon.
For some people, snow-covered trails and landscapes are an obstacle to movement. For others, they’re an invitation to don a pair of skis or snowshoes and move more freely and gracefully than at any other time, through magical forests and over hills to picture-perfect postcard views of mountain valleys and lakes below.
Route options are infinite; from numerous well-marked and groomed trails to picking your own path along virgin snow. The Yukon’s winter adventure operators can cater an experience to meet your needs and interests. Perhaps it’s an all-out alpine backcountry cross-country ski to a remote cabin on paths well-trod by mountain caribou. Alternatively, it could be as simple as to strap on the snowshoes, after dessert and before the hot tub, and meander just minutes from the luxury lodge.
Your guides and winter adventure companies will outfit you well to make sure you enjoy the snow in comfort and safety. You owe it to yourself to experience the joy and freedom that Yukon snow offers.
Imagine what it would be like if you fired up your snowmobile and just went anywhere you wanted, as far as you wanted, for as long as you wanted and never ran out of snowy trails, mountain slopes and valley bottoms. Until you reached your warm wilderness lodge at day’s end for a drink and story swap with friends. Our operators have imagined just such a day for you and can put you in the driver’s seat.
Choose from guided snowmobiling trips on beautiful groomed or rarely explored trails, or rentals for the independent types. Either way, Yukon guides won’t leave you without a helmet, warm clothes, a safety briefing, and food and warm drinks for along the way.
Package it up with some snowshoeing, ice fishing or northern lights viewing for a larger-than-life experience worth bragging about when you get home.
When you don't have the time or ability to explore the wilderness under your own steam, consider a motorized trip on an all-terrain vehicle or from behind the wheel of a 4X4 SUV or in the comforts of a guided motorboat, cruising down the Yukon’s rivers and lakes.
Motorized exploration by ATV or SUV is a non-stop charge with the possibility of wild surprises around every bend. Base your trip from town or from a wilderness lodge, or camp along the way. Using established backcountry roads, your guides will navigate you to areas made for the panoramic function of your camera.
On the water, your Yukon guide will take you from point to point, showing you natural wonders, historical highlights and wildlife along the way. The boats that tour these waters are outfitted for comfort, sightseeing and wilderness camping.
Put a motor on it and see even more of the Yukon.
The Yukon’s backcountry is even more spectacular when you see it from the back of a reliable, sure-footed, weight-bearing companion. So much unspoiled and untouched country, a great deal of it above treeline, is just an invitation for you to explore its trails, routes, and panoramic vistas from horseback.
Experienced backcountry guides will take care of everything from tacking up to preparing that gourmet meal you’ll still be talking about next winter. Sleeping under the stars, in a wall tent, or a working trapper’s cabin is your choice. Whatever you decide, make sure to take in that never-setting sun and squeeze every little bit out of this unique northwestern experience.
From day trips out of Whitehorse to multi-day riding vacations and pack trips, make friends with a four-footed companion, and see the Yukon’s pristine mountains, lakes and wilderness in a whole new way.
Just once, wouldn’t it feel good to tie into one of those monster lakers? Or maybe a northern pike as long as your arm, cruising through the weedbeds, looking for a tasty 8” pink bunny pattern? What about our unique, sail-finned grayling, God’s gift to fly fishers, as pretty a fish as you’ll ever see?
Well, not to brag or anything, but, ahem, if you’d like to turn your fishing up a notch or ten, you’ve come to the right place.
The Yukon’s waterways are home to 27 species of freshwater fish, 11 classified as sport fish. Whatever you're angling for – from lake trout, Arctic grayling, northern pike, Dolly Varden, whitefish, burbot, inconnu to salmon – Yukon guides will steer you in the right direction.
Even then, catching fish may become secondary given the wildlife to encounter, waters to explore, and the cozy cabin comforts or luxury lodges to enjoy after a perfect day of fishing.
Frothing water, calving glaciers, iceberg-crammed lakes, waterfalls and hanging valleys – Yukon’s professional guides can deliver on all these. Class III and IV rafting trips bring together wilderness treasures with heart-pumping and life-changing experiences.
Whether you join up with a scheduled multi-day trip on a major wilderness river or customize your own family rafting adventure, Yukon companies and their expert guides take care of the details.
You just take care of your own stuff, like viewing the bald eagles, grizzlies and caribou, the mountainsides of wildflowers and the sheer beauty of pristine wilderness. Experience that unique sense of “escape” and a connection to ever-changing rivers carving their way deeper into mountain canyons — and into your soul.
It had been a long time since I’d woken so excited to greet a new day. We wolfed down our breakfasts, grabbed our gear, and piled into the van for the trip to the top of the mountain. High on a sunny ridge, we looked down on nothing but wilderness – and the tiny threads of singletrack. My partner cinched down her helmet, grabbed a bike and said, "This is gonna be epic…”
Dare to dream of Yukon-sized awesome… Hiking, biking, water-based or nature-viewing, we’ll put you into some Yukon awesomeness, even if it’s just a day.
What is this profound mystery in the sky, I wondered, as I turned my face to the night. Curtains of light stretched to the horizons, shifting in colour and intensity as if a supernatural being was waving an enchanted flag over the entire universe. It was an invitation into the magic and mystery of the aurora borealis.

To call the Chilkoot a trail is an understatement. It is a historic saga, the first step in a foundational story, a cultural and national divide and, even today, a rite of passage. Hiking into the territory by way of the Chilkoot is the most profound and meaningful way to come to know the Yukon. For this is a historic, outdoor museum, littered with the discarded equipment, bleached bones and the ghosts of the gold stampeders of 1898. It is also one of the most beautiful wilderness treks you will ever make.
From a lush river valley, through abandoned tent city sites, past the grave markers of those whose dreams ended on the trail, and into the Yukon by way of the legendary golden stairs – the Chilkoot represents the biggest bucket on a hiker’s bucket list.
Embark on a multi-day adventure with an experienced, fully licenced Yukon Wild guide. Or if you prefer a self-guided trip, Yukon Wild operators and outfitters will help you get the necessary permits for this international, 53-km trail, and outfit you with all the equipment and advice you need.
If there’s one wilderness hike every Yukoner dreams of doing at least once in their life, it’s the Tombstones. The craggy, otherworldly, utterly beautiful Tombstone Mountains epitomize everything that’s good and true and beautiful about the Yukon. It embodies what we think of when we say the words “pristine wilderness.” And the best part? It's completely accessible.
To step into this “Patagonia of the North” is to step back into a land before time. Where black granite pinnacles jut thousands of feet into the sky, where hidden green valleys carpeted in flowers reveal crystalline lakes, and where the only forces at work are wind, sun, water and ice.
Yukon Wild operators can assist you any way you like, from a helicopter drop-off in the heart of the range to multi-day tours for groups, families, and independent travellers. Pick any option – you cannot lose.
The Wind, the Snake and the Bonnet Plume – are there any names more seductive to a paddler’s ear and imagination? Well, possibly, the Blackstone, Hart, and Ogilvie. These lifetime, bucket-list dreams form the six navigable tributaries of the Peel River Watershed, a rugged landscape larger than Scotland, with deep canyons, high plateaus, forested valleys and rolling hills.
One of the last intact mountain boreal ecosystems in the world, the Peel is home to moose, grizzly bears, Dall sheep, caribou and wolves. Once experienced, it will be the home of your paddler’s heart.
The Yukon Wild operators linked below offer group or customized multi-day adventures into this magnificent watershed. Talk to them and figure out which river will suit you. Just rest assured, they will suit.
The cabin was quiet, the dogs curled up and asleep, as I stepped outside to stand alone in the wilderness under a dancing, fiery sky. It was like being in a novel, the narrative powered by dogsled, the setting a winter wonderland. And tomorrow we’d write a whole new chapter…
Dare to dream of Yukon-sized winterscapes… Whether your preferred soundtrack is the howling of a game team of huskies or the roaring of revved snowmobile engines, we’ve got a winter adventure for you.
We scaled the small ridge to the west and hiked into the upper canyon. Within an hour, we were surrounded by 500-foot walls of rock on three sides, our green valley lost in another world behind us. We carried on, in search of the narrow pass that would lead us over the mountain and into the wonders of yet another pristine valley wilderness to the North.
Dare to dream of Yukon-sized adventures… From rugged wilderness to cabin-based day hikes, we’ll make Yukon’s backcountry your country.
I took my morning coffee to the river’s edge and heard the distant thrum of the fast water that marked today’s Class III section. As the mist lifted, a movement on the far bank materialized into an enormous caribou, followed by another and another… They stepped into the river, swam across to a point below and melted back into the forest. My day had only just begun.
Dare to dream of Yukon-sized river trips… Day or wilderness trip, guided or self, we’ll get you on the water and into a bigger picture of your own.
You’ll be amazed at the energy that flows through the harness and tackle as these remarkable dogs pull you with power and grace through the wilderness to your remote cabin on the lakeshore.
Your guide will ensure you are dressed well and teach you to harness a team, the basics of mushing and, most importantly, dog care. Whether you ride on the runners or you sit in the basket, dogsledding is the epitome of exhilarating adventure in Canada’s Yukon.
You'll find dogsledding adventures for every level of musher, from beginner to expert. Head out on a short day trip and imagine you're in the famous Yukon Quest. Or spend a week with the "dogs packed tight" on a winter camping experience with wall tents under the northern lights. With the dogs fed, watered and asleep, sit back, enjoy a warm drink by the fire, and enter the storybook world of a Yukon winter.
Mushing is sure to become your highlight experience, an iconic memory of all that the Yukon has to offer.
Seriously, the backcountry starts well within Whitehorse city limits – that’s why they call it “the Wilderness City” after all. If you’re a hiker or trekker, the Yukon was made for you. With a knowledgeable Yukon Wild guide, a sturdy pair of boots, and as much as 24 hours of daylight, you'll be all set for an experience unlike any you’ve had before.
Experience the historic Chilkoot Trail and the abandoned settlements high in the pass; venture into Kluane National Park for a remote and challenging trek; or, see the impossibly jagged Tombstone Mountains just north of Dawson City. Follow in the footsteps of the Klondike Gold Rush stampeders, our First Nations people, and the caribou, moose, grizzlies and Dall sheep that call this place home.
At the end of the day, your guide’s culinary magic and the mountain fresh air will have you in your sleeping bag dreaming of even greater things to come.
Remote, wild and challenging or quiet, contemplative and invitational, there’s a Yukon river or lake for every paddler. And whether you’re looking for gentle or challenging, the thing they all share is pure water and pristine wilderness settings.
Choose from historic gold rush routes, remote and untouched backcountry water, or the big water rapids, canyons, glaciers and icebergs of Yukon’s Canadian Heritage Rivers.
Licensed guides from Yukon Wild operators will reveal Yukon’s secret places to you over the course of a multi-day adventure. Other operators can give you advice, provide information and rent you the appropriate equipment for a clean and simple self-guided excursion.
